Arlen Howe, 83, of Central City, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 22, 2018, in his home. The family will greet friends from 12 – 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at the American Legion Wapsie Post #421 in Central City. Funeral Services will follow beginning at 1 p.m. at the American Legion on Sunday. A private committal service will be held at a later date.

Arlen was born on September 23, 1934 in Marion, Iowa to Ethelyn Faye (Goodyear) and John Howe. He graduated from Marion High School in 1952. Arlen married Frieda Mae (Nesetril) on June 5, 1955.

Arlen was a master carpenter who built houses for more than 35 years before retiring in 1996. Arlen had a passion for woodworking, and crafted wooden knives, boxes, chests, log drums and many other beautiful works of art, including a cradle for his grandchildren. There were many things that Arlen loved in life, including nature, golfing, card club with friends, hunting (animals and mushrooms), coffee with “the boys”, and most of all, God and his family.

Survivors include his wife, Frieda; children, Jeanne, Mark (Joyce) and Dona (Charlie Braun); his grandchildren, Seth (Alyssa) Rosendahl, Rich (Sheri) Rosendahl, Hollyanne Collins, Paige Howe, and Beatrice Braun; his great-grandchildren, Haley, Ethan, Laila, Hendrix, Brycen and Hunter; his sister, Marabelle Frye; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Holly Howe-Burgess; great-granddaughter, Mikaela Collins; his parents; three sisters, Gaylene (Perry) Powers, Effie (Rusty) Rust, and Donnalee (Dick) Shellin; and five brothers, John (Theresa), Verlet (Georgie), R.D. (Jane), L.C. (Connie) and Delwin (Shirley).

The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice for their affectionate and professional care of Arlen. Special thanks go to Krista, Jennifer, Sarah, Robin, Bill, and Cindy.
