Alice C. Grant, 94, of Manchester, died Thursday, April 13, 2006 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following a lingering illness.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Manchester by Pastor Jake Each. Friends may call from 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester and for one hour before services Monday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.

Alice was born on May 29, 1911 in Sioux City, the daughter of Harry J. and Maude C. (Foster) Ryan. Alice graduated from Central High School, Sioux City, in 1926. She obtained her teaching certificate from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, now known as the University of Northern Iowa. She attended summer school in southern California and two summers in Boulder, Colorado. Alice first taught at a rural school in Plymouth County, Iowa. For two years, she taught preschool at the Community House in Sioux City. On July 14, 1942, Alice was united in marriage to Robert Grant in Sioux City. Alice graduated in 1963 from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. In 1936, Alice moved to Manchester and for the next thirty-nine years, taught kindergarten at the parish house, Lincoln, Central Schools and Kindergarten Building. Alice retired in 1976.

Alice was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Manchester where she taught youth and adult Sunday school well into her 80?s. She served on the mission committee and was church mission treasurer for many years. Alice belonged to the Manchester Afternoon Book Review Club, Women?s Federation Club, Del-Clay Retired Teachers Association and the Christian Women?s Club where she served as an officer. She enjoyed writing letters to the missionaries, sending numerous postcards to students, family and friends, and sending birthday and anniversary cards to many people. Alice also enjoyed knitting, reading and growing flowers in her yard.

Alice is survived by two children, Virginia Grant and Larry (Louise) Grant, both of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Denise (Guy) Tillett and Mark (Patricia) Grant; three great-grandchildren, Eric, Rachel and Brett; a sister, Margaret Bonecutter of Sarasota, FL; sister-in-law, Ruth Ryan of Houston, TX; and two nieces, Beth (Vas) Kenyen of Houston, TX and Anne Aldrich of Strawberry Point.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Harry & Maude Ryan; her husband, Robert Grant on April 17, 1986; two brothers, Vincent Ryan in 1942 and John Ryan in 1976; and a brother-in-law, Eugene Bonecutter.
