Allan "Al" Terry Aasen

Allan “Al” Terry Aasen, 76, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at home. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. Memorial service will follow at 12 p.m. Burial will be at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Born on August 3, 1949, in Sioux City, Iowa, Al was the son of Earl and Mabyn (Johnson) Aasen and a graduate of Riverside High School. On March 31, 1973, he married the love of his life, Debra “Deb” Sue Wolter, at Nativity Church in Dubuque, Iowa. Al spent over 36 years as an inspector and surveyor with the Iowa Department of Transportation, retiring with pride in 2007. Faith and community were central to his life through his membership with St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, the Knights of Columbus, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hiawatha.

Al embraced life with joy. He traveled to Ireland, Italy, and nearly all 50 states. He enjoyed peaceful lake views and birdwatching, was an avid reader, and never missed a daily crossword puzzle. He and Deb cherished their 19-year weekly dinner tradition with close friends. He was a long-time Hawkeye fan but also cheered on the Cyclones as he lived in a house divided. His greatest devotion was always to his family, whether attending his grandkids’ sporting events or just spending time with them, which was evident when the couple relocated to Wisconsin for five years just to attend their grandchildren’s activities. His presence, warmth, and legacy will be remembered by all who knew him.

Al is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Debra Aasen of Cedar Rapids; sons, Jeff (Camy) Aasen of Amery, Wisconsin, and Mike (Nicole) Aasen of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; grandchildren, Bailey (Joe Heim), Zachar (Heather Degler), Adam, and Charlie; brother, John Aasen of Fort Worth, Texas; in-laws, Dale (Diana) Wels, Susan (Ken) Wiezorek, David (Donna) Wolter, and Herman (Joni) Meyer; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mabyn and Earl Aasen; sister, Candice; and parent-in-laws, Gerald and Edna Wolter.
