Ruth Appleby, 89, of Manchester, Iowa, died Friday morning, October 28, 2005, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 31, 2005 at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Manchester, with Rev. Kurt Pasko officiating. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester and for one hour before services on Monday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Ruth was born July 14, 1916 in Hopkinton, the daughter of William Temple and Myrtle Alleda (Sheppard) Taylor. As a youth, she played the violin and wrote poetry for her family. Ruth graduated in 1933 from Grant High School in Cedar Rapids and then studied nursing at Coe College. Ruth married Donald W. Appleby on June 8, 1938 at the St. James Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. In 1941, the couple moved to Waterloo before moving to Manchester in 1944. Ruth obtained her Licensed Practical Nursing degree in 1958. She worked for the Delaware County Memorial Hospital and Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, retiring in 1972. Ruth and Don enjoyed wintering in Mission, Texas. They moved to the Good Neighbor Home in 1999.
Ruth was a member of the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Manchester where she taught Sunday School and served in various positions, including Deconess. She loved music; singing in the church and Messiah choirs for over forty years was a member of the Sweet Adelines. Ruth helped form the Christian Women?s Club in Manchester and was a member of Gideons Auxillary International. Ruth enjoyed crocheting afghans for her grandchildren and fishing with Don.
Ruth is survived by her five sons, David (Helen) of Cincinnati, OH, William D. "Bill? (Linda) of Des Moines, Michael "Mitch? (Leslie) of Dubuque, Richard "Rick? of Manchester and James W. (Mary) of Newton; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Appleby in 2004; her parents, William & Myrtle Taylor; a sister and brother-in-law, Gertrude "Trudy? & Millard "Mick? Allen.
