Alma was born on October 22, 1908, in Manchester, the daughter of James E. and Cora E. (Baxter) Smith. She received her elementary education at Central School in Manchester and graduated from Manchester High School in 1927. Following graduation, Alma worked for the Hall family and then at the Glen Charles Hotel in Manchester.

On February 10, 1932 Alma was united in marriage to Herman H. Iben in Morrison, Illinois. The couple lived on the farm where Herman was born in Prairie Township for the next 34 years. Alma was active in many facets; serving as co-leader of the Prairie Jolly Girls 4-H Club with her sister, Mable Barr and at First Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and as a member of the women?s group where she served as chairman for the committee which served wedding receptions including those of her own daughters. The couple was members of the Prairie Center Grange and the Delaware County Farm Bureau.

Alma enjoyed gardening and produced beautiful flowers around their farm home. She also had a large garden and did extensive canning from that garden. Alma learned to sew at an early age and happily continued that hobby most of her life by making much of her children?s clothing and sewing for her grandchildren. In 1966, the couple moved to 304 East Union Street in Manchester. Alma worked at and taught sewing classes Rauh?s Federated Store (later known as Rauh?s Fabrics). Herman died in 1971 and Alma continued to live in their home until 1996, when she moved to the Good Neighbor Home, where she died.

Alma is survived by her two daughters, Gail (Donald) Maurer of Manchester and Nadine (Blayne) Maring of Austin, TX; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Kathy (Dennis) Meisgeier and Nathan & Taylor, Curtis (Mary) Maurer and Sarah & Matt, all of Manchester, Karen Collins and Allie & Zoe of Urbandale, Sheri (Marshall) Land of Wimberly, TX, David Maring of Columbia, MD, and Steven (Christa) Maring and Madison & Cole of Tarpon Springs, FL.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband Herman Iben in 1971; an infant daughter Marilyn Iben in 1932; two brothers, Clifford Smith and Gerald Smith; and one sister, Mable Barr.
