Alvin E. Thompson, 73, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, in his home, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Dr. Glenn Hunt. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2006, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, at a later date.

Survivors include his wife, Clara; his mother, Agnes Thompson of Fayette, Iowa; two daughters, Cheryl Thompson of Cedar Rapids and Pam (Steve) Squires of Coggon; a special son, Mike Sevart of Atkins; three grandchildren, Augie (Becky) Sevart, Jennie (Nate) Underwood and Josh Sevart, all of Cedar Rapids; two great-grandchildren, Sky Sevart and expected in May, Aidyn (Ole) Underwood; two brothers, Les (Ruby) Thompson of Floyd, Iowa, and Raymond Thompson of Oelwein, Iowa; a sister, Berniece (Chuck) Engelbrecht of Meridian, Mississippi; a sister-in-law, Linda Thompson of LeGrand, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hawley Thompson; and a brother, Robert Thompson.

Alvin was born July 30, 1932, the son of Hawley and Agnes Thompson, in West Union, Iowa. On June 29, 1952, he married Clara in West Union, Iowa. Alvin worked as an operating engineer in the construction business for 40 years, retiring from Dave Schmitt Construction in 1994. He was a member of the North Linn Fish & Game Club, Local 234 Operating Engineers and a former member of the Cedar Rapids Antique Auto Club.

An avid antique gas engine collector, Alvin enjoyed going to gas engine shows, fishing, camping and helping elderly neighbors. He loved attending family get-togethers and spending time with his family and friends, including his grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established in memory of Alvin.
