Annie Lavere Smith, 86, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, January 25, 2018, at Mercy Hospital, following a short illness. Service: 11:30 a.m., Friday, February 2, 2018, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, conducted by Dr. Michael Gray. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Burial at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Annie was born March 25, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Harold and Lucille (Bosworth) Hatter. She was united in marriage to Leroy Smith on August 13, 1955 in Cedar Rapids. He preceded her in death on June 7, 2012.
Annie accepted Christ as her Savior on Sunday, June 25, 1961 at Grace Baptist Church, Marion, Iowa.
One of the greatest joys of Annie’s life was her cat, Sugar. She also loved to dance, go to garage sales, shop at Goodwill, play BINGO, put together puzzles, make crafts from plastic canvas, play piano, listen to country music and bake. She enjoyed watching basketball, wrestling and game shows on T.V. In her younger years, Annie was a Blue Bird and Campfire Girl leader and a room mother in her kids’ classrooms. She loved to laugh and you couldn’t help joining in. Annie was a loving wife and mother, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Annie is survived by her children, Jeanne (Mike) Gray of San Diego, CA, Bill (Terry) Smith of Cedar Rapids, IA, Janet (Alan) Thatcher of Marion, IA, Donna (Randy) Nelson of Milpitas, CA, Raymond Ash of LaPorte City, IA, and Rose Adams of Cedar Rapids, IA; 21 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren (with 3 more on the way).
Annie was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Lucille Hatter; stepfather, Robert S. Ash; son, LeRoy Witham; brother, Ira Hatter; and sister, Arlene Dana.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to all of the wonderful staff and her many friends at Ridge View Assisted Living for the excellent and loving care they gave Annie, and for the kindness they showed the family. This was Annie’s extended family and she lived her life to the fullest there.
