Arnold “Arnie” A. Stevenson, 73, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was called to Jesus' side on April 26, 2025, at Promise House, Hiawatha. He died from complications due to Parkinson's disease with Lewy body dementia.
Arnold Allen Stevenson was born December 22, 1951, in Sheldon, IA. He was the oldest child of Allen and Arleen (Willert) Stevenson. He grew up in Cherokee, IA, with younger sister Jane, born 3 years later. He graduated from Washington High School (Cherokee) in 1970, where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. After a year at Morningside College, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war in June 1971 and served his country in Frankfurt, Germany until 1974. He later attended Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Economics in 1978.
In 1978, Arnie began his career as a Revenue Officer for the Internal Revenue Service until his retirement in 2012. In 1995, he was awarded the Federal Executive Council of Central Iowa Professional Employee of the Year.
On June 13, 1981, he married his wife and best friend of 43 years, Kristie Eighmey. They were blessed with their daughter Rachel (Dankert), in 1990. He was also the proud father-in-law to James Dankert and grandpa to Laura.
Arnie was most at home in his vegetable garden, and enjoyed keeping up his yard, fixing up his 1977 Corvette, fishing, attending the annual Milwaukee Irish Fest with friends and family, and cheering on his New York Yankees. Arnie lived his faith in service to Jesus as Good Shepherd Lutheran Church vice president and secretary, elder, usher, choir member and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Walker American Legion Ray Post 376.
Arnie was preceded in death by his parents Allen and Arleen and his mother-in-law Anita Eighmey. He is survived by his devoted wife Kristie; daughter Rachel Dankert (James) and granddaughter Laura; sister Jane Braband of Duluth, MN, and her two children Tom and Jacey and their families. He is also survived by his father-in-law Frank Eighmey; in-laws Nita Randolph, Gayle Reierson (Greg) and her son Aaron and his family, and Drew Eighmey (Mary) and their children Nicholas, Olivia and Natalie.
The service will be at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2900 42nd St. NE, Cedar Rapids. The visitation will be held on May 17, 2025, from 9 to 10:45 a.m., immediately before the service at 11 a.m. A meal will immediately follow the service. A private family burial with military honors provided by the Walker American Legion will be held at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Cedar Rapids or the Cedar Rapids Metro Parkinson's Association.
