Arnold L. Mensen, 82, of Earlville, Iowa passed away Monday afternoon, August 2, 2004 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 5 at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Earlville by Rev. Herbert Tegeler. Friends may call from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home in Earlville with a Rosary at 2:00 and Scripture Service at 8:00. Burial will be in St. Joseph?s Catholic Cemetery, Earlville.
Arnold was born on June 30, 1922 in Petersburg, the son of Frank and Henrietta (Kramer) Mensen. He attended country school in Petersburg and helped on the family farm. Arnold entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as an electrician aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Flusser, of the 5th & 7th Fleet in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945. On November 26, 1946 Arnold was united in marriage to Charlotte A. Funke at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Greeley. The couple farmed northeast of Petersburg before purchasing their farm southwest of Petersburg. In 1977, the couple retired and moved to Earlville.
Arnold was a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Earlville. He was a lifelong member of the Earlville Carpenter-Diesch-White American Legion Post #436 and the New Vienna V.F.W. Post #7736. Arnold enjoyed playing the card game Solo and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a loving father and husband who especially loved time spent with his grand and great-grandchildren.
Arnold is survived by his wife, Charlotte Mensen of Earlville, five children, Bob (Georgina) Mensen of New Vienna, Rosie (Jerry) Moorman of Manchester, Dave (Karen) Mensen of Delhi, Brenda (Phil) Luensmann of Salida, CO, Mark (Cindy) Mensen of Earlville; seventeen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leo (Dorothy) Mensen of Earlville and Laverne (Janice) Mensen of Petersburg; and a sister-in-law, Irene Mensen of Manchester.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Henrietta Mensen; two brothers, Edmund & Ambrose Mensen; a son-in-law, Jim Philipp; and one granddaughter, Annette Mensen.
