Berdina M. "Betty? Hampton, 86, formerly of Whittier and a resident of Mercy Hallmar, Cedar Rapids, died at the care center on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Springville Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Karen Downey Beals. Friends may call at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center from 4 - 7 p.m. Friday (March 12.) Private burial services will be held at the Friends Cemetery, Whittier, Iowa.
Survivors include her children, Peggy Ewart of Springville and her companion, Richard Crawford of Marion, Carrol (Doug) Hanna of Springville and Larry (Barb) Hampton of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Jerry (Lavon) Hampton of Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Donna (Bill) Rasmussen of Hillsboro, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Robert Banta and Vernon Ward.
Betty was born the daughter of Andy and Berdina Ruth (Barker) Ward on November 2, 1917, in Seattle, Washington. She graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1936. On January 1, 1943, she was united in marriage to Hillis Eugene "Gene? Hampton in San Diego, California, while Gene was serving in the Navy. He died January 28, 1990. Betty and her husband owned and operated the American Wood Shop on Center Point Road in Cedar Rapids for thirty-five years, retiring in 1981. Gene and Betty were longtime residents of Whittier.
