Bernus P. Kooreman, 93, a resident of Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, died there Thursday, April 13, 2006, from complications of an illness. Services: Noon Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, by the Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Kay Romano and husband Pat, and two grandchildren, Michelle and Patrick, all of Peoria, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on July 14, 2005.
Bernus was born October 27, 1912, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Frank and Louise Vancura Pirkl. She graduated from Grant High School in 1931, and Coe College in 1935, with her major in physical education and minors in voice and speech. She taught at Delhi and Rockwell City high schools, then later at McKinley Junior High School in Cedar Rapids. She also taught ballet to many of her pupils.
Bernus married John A. Kooreman on August 23, 1941, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Delta Zeta Phi Eta; Women?s Glee Club, Vesper Choir at St. Paul?s United Methodist Church; Beethoven Club; College Club; Chapter I.F. of P.E.O.; and Elmcrest Country Club. She was active in church musical activities and was a soloist in many different churches. During the war years, Bernus was health recreation director of the Y.W.C.A. and focused on the development of dancing and exercise classes.
