Bertus L. Helmrichs, 90, of Manchester, Iowa died Monday, February 8, 2010 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, following a brief illness.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 12, 2010 at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester, Iowa with Rev. Dr. Jean Rabary officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester and one hour before services Friday at the church. Burial will be in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Ryan.

Bertus was born January 5, 1920 in Manchester, the son of Johann and Johanna (Leesekamp) Helmrichs. He attended country school near home and helped on the family farm before joining the U.S. Army in January 1942. He dedicated four years in the Pacific Theater during WWII where he was awarded the Purple Heart. On June 4, 1945, Bertus was united in marriage to Ruth M. Downs at the Ryan Lutheran Parsonage. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids for a short time before moving to the Helmrichs’ family farm south of Manchester. They retired in 1978 and moved into Manchester.

Bertus was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Manchester. He enjoyed playing the guitar, harmonica, ukulele and organ, taking part in many jam sessions in Hazelton. Bertus, also spent many hours woodworking. The couple enjoyed wintering in the south and camping throughout the year. Bertus and Ruth were very giving and compassionate couple who always offered help to others.

Bertus is survived by his daughter and husband and their children, Verla and David Tegeler of Manchester, Stephanie of Cedar Rapids, Timothy of Cedar Falls and Jonathan Tegeler at home. He is also survived by Arlyn’s children, Sandy, Jeanette, Tanya, Michael, and Christopher and one brother, Marvin (Doris) Helmrichs of Manchester.

Bertus was preceded in death by his parents, Johann and Johanna Helmrichs; his wife, Ruth Helmrichs in June 2008; a son, Arlyn Helmrichs, and a brother and his wife, Reinhart & Esther Helmrichs.
