Bette A. Blakey, 73, of 1009 10th Street S.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, in Living Center West, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Services: 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 16, 2007, at the funeral home. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Nancy Fielder of Cedar Rapids, Stanley Blakey of Richmond, Virginia, Spencer Blakey of Cedar Rapids and Alexia (Mark) Taylor of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Andrew Quinn Blakey, Ward Taylor, Amara Taylor and Ayla Taylor; sisters Lorraine Williams of Libertyville, Illinois, Barbara Brooks of Albany, New York and Patricia Hicks of Las Vegas, Nevada; and brother, Gordan “Corkey” Madlock of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andrew; grandson, Justin O. Fielder; and two brothers, John and Donald Madlock.
Bette was born June 29, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Captain Sherman and Geneva (Crank) Madlock. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1952, and St. Anthony's School of Nursing in Rock Island, Illinois. On November 22, 1958, she married Andrew Blakey. He died in October of 2004. She worked as an RN for most of her career in Cedar Rapids and for over 30 years for the Cedar Rapids School District as a School Nurse.
Bette was a member of Bethel AME Church. She began her nursing career in pediatrics and was a lifelong advocate for children.
