Burton “Bud” F. Kolek, 95, of 3131 F. Avenue NW, Cedar Rapids, died Monday, January 28, 2008, at West Ridge Care Center, following a long illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 31, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Larry Q. Chambers. The family will greet family and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Adelaide; his children, Dennis (Karon) Kolek of Cedar Rapids and Yvette (Paul) McCulley of Council Bluffs; four grandchildren, Robbie Kolek, Denise McKeown, Meggan Anderson and Eric McCulley; 14 great-grandchildren, Ashleigh, Amber, Madison, Casey, Cailey, Cody, Madelline, Morgan, Maison, Maryn, Aaron, Travis, Dylan and Cameron; and a sister, Frances (Paul) Koch of Mt. Vernon.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Wesley, Robert, Richard and Donald Kolek; a sister, Evelyn Hyde and a grandson, Timothy Lee Kolek.
Bud was born August 11, 1912, the son of Frank and Emma (Krob) Kolek, in Lisbon, Iowa. He graduated from Lisbon High School, where he sang in the school choir. Bud served his country with the United States Army during World War II. On May 14, 1940, he was united in marriage to Adelaide E. Nemecek in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Bud was a foreman for the Model Paint and Wallpaper Company for many years.
He loved dancing and music, especially western music and the big band music. Bud enjoyed drawing cartoon characters and playing the Spanish and Hawaiian guitars.
