Carol A. Hankemeier
September 20, 1944 — March 30, 2006
Carol A. Hankemeier, 61, of Mt. Vernon, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at St. Luke?s Hospital, following a short illness. Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Monday, April 3, 2006, at Ascension Lutheran Church by Pastor Linda Livingston. The family will greet friends from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include her husband of thirty-seven years, Glen; a son, Kevin (Linda) Hankemeier of Normal, Illinois; a daughter, Krista Soper of Cedar Rapids; her mother, Serena Ballard; three sisters, Pat McCaffery of Denver, North Carolina, Karen (Preston) Whayland of Chesapeake, Virginia and Lauren Manning of Forrest Hills, Maryland; and four grandchildren, Ciara, Jory, Ryan and Justin.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence, who passed away in 2003.
Carol was born September 20, 1944, the daughter of Lawrence and Serena (Altomare) Ballard in Baltimore, Maryland. She received her BSN from St. Xavier College in Chicago in 1966. On May 3, 1969, she married Glen Hankemeier in Chicago. Carol worked at St. Luke?s Hospital for thirty-six years.
Carol was a very active member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Marion and was a member of the Gourmet Club. Carol will be remembered as one of the first flight nurses on St. Luke?s Lifeguard helicopter. She enjoyed fishing trips with friends and time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
