Cathryn Marie Vanous, 88, of Lake City, Florida, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 29, 2006, at the Lake City Health Center, following an extended illness. Funeral Mass: 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2006, at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Steve Rosonke and Father Denny Juhl. Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her two sons, Steve (Eleanor) Vanous, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Ken (Pat) Vanous of Lake City, Florida; three grandsons, Doug (Jill) Vanous, of Champlin, Minnesota, Mike (Susan) Vanous, of Avondale Estates, Georgia, and Brendan (Cindy) Vanous, of Seattle, Washington; a stepgranddaughter, Alisa (Kevin) Thoresen of Greensboro, North Carolina; three great-grandsons, Benjamin, Noah, and Matthew; and one great-granddaughter, Rachel Cathryn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernie; a sister, Evelyn Smith; and two brothers, Mike Collins and Lawrence Collins.
Cathryn was born October 31, 1917, the daughter of Michael P. and Marie (Fitzpatrick) Collins, in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from Washington High School in 1934 and attended Coe College School of Music. At the age of 12, Cathryn was a professional singer with a featured program on KWCR, Cedar Rapids. She was crowned Queen of Iowa in 1935 and continued her singing career, singing with The Ted Weems, Jan Garber and Ted Flo-Rito Orchestras until 1938, when she married the love of her life, Ernest L. Vanous. He died in 1995. Mr. and Mrs. Vanous resided in Iowa until their relocation to Lake City, Florida, due to health reasons. Mrs. Vanous attended St. Francis Xavier Parish in Live Oak, Florida and Epiphany Catholic Church in Lake City, Florida.
