Beloved son Chad Alan Mote was born November 21, 1971, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His identical twin brother Brad was stillborn. Chad passed away peacefully at his REM home supported by family, his compassionate REM caregivers, his housemates, and Unity Point Hospice on January 13, 2026.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia Mote; his father, Eric (Jean) Mote; his aunts, Sandy (Jack) Thompson and Barbara (John) Gilbertson; his uncles, Greg Klees and Clint (Gale) Mote; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his twin, Brad; and his aunt, Christy Klees.
Chad initially seemed to be a healthy, happy baby but soon fell behind normal developmental goals. He was diagnosed with multiple medical issues including intellectual disability and cerebral palsy which resulted in a lifetime of severe disability.
After living at home with his mother and father for 13 years, Chad moved to New Horizons (NH), Living Center East in Cedar Rapids, an intermediate care facility for physically challenged and intellectually disabled children. He resided at New Horizons for 34 years until Unity Point decided to close the NH facility in 2019. REM Iowa recognized the need for living facilities and offered to build and staff group homes for Chad and many other New Horizons clients. Truly a gift of hope to parents and a blessing from REM.
Chad benefited from participating in programs provided by the Taylor Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Rapids, the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton, Iowa, The Monroe Developmental Center in Cedar Rapids, special education classes at Jefferson High School, Cedar Rapids, Linn County Options, and the REM Day Program. He had an infectious smile and although limited verbal capabilities, his loud “Hi” would always bring smiles to those around him. Chad enjoyed his housemates, listening to music (Sesame Street a favorite), van rides and adaptive bowling. A tradition of excellent care started at New Horizons and continued and grew with the thoughtful, caring, loving staff at REM.
