Cindy was born on July 8, 1955, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth Albert and Marilyn Eliza (Folken) Schmidt. She was a 1973 graduate of Springville High School. On March 20, 1976, Cindy was united in marriage to Donald Frederick Wittenburg at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church in Scotch Grove, Iowa. Cindy enjoyed gardening, canning, and spending time with her family. Family meant the world to Cindy, especially her grandchildren; she could be found cheering them on at any of their million events. Known as a social butterfly who "flitted around," she never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew her. All she wanted was for the people in her life to be happy and Peace on Earth and Goodwill toward all.

Cindy is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, Brad Wittenburg, Matt (Natalie) Wittenburg, Stacy (Anthony) Mason, and Crystal Dietiker (Matt Bergstrom); grandchildren, Caleb (Nattasha) Mason, Tristan Dietiker (Alexis Williams), Logan Mason (Kenna Kramer), Taryn Wittenburg, Audrey Wittenburg (David Pierce), Aleena Wittenburg, Lexi Dietiker, Lily Wittenburg, Jack Wittenburg, and Grant Wittenburg; great-grandchildren, Micah Kephart, Ezra Dietiker, and Baby Mason, due early December 2026; and siblings, Doug (Linda) Schmidt, Pam (Pat) Taylor, and Carri Bieber (Ernie Freese).
