Cledith L. “Clete” Smith, 74, of Alburnett, died Thursday, February 7, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Service: 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 11, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Jonna Jensen. The family will greet friends from 1-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett.

Survivors include his wife, June; four children, Chris (Becky) Smith of Clive, Darla (Rex) Grimm of Palo, Lori Reed of Hiawatha, and Rod (Laurie) Smith of Urbandale; eleven grandchildren, Jeremy, Kyle, Adam, Tyler, Janel, Bryn, Blake, Erin, Spenser, Karna, and Lydia; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Sam, and Hunter.

Also surviving are two sisters, Norma Knapp of Marion and Hilda Martin of Alburnett; and three brothers, Ardith Smith of Alburnett, Wayne Smith of Waterloo, and Pete Smith of Olin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Aubrey, Lowell, and Don Smith; and a grandson, Kevin Smith.

Cledith was born July 7, 1933, the son of George and Gertrude Smith in Linn County. He graduated from Alburnett High School in 1951. He served with the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict. On July 29, 1956, he married June Marie Berry in Alburnett. Clete worked as head custodian and bus driver for Alburnett Community Schools for over thirty years. After his retirement, Clete worked for VanMeter Industrial for eleven years.

He was a member of Meadowview Country Club in Central City and Board of Directors at Farmers Mutual Telephone Company.

Clete enjoyed mushrooming, fishing, golf, Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Braves, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, customers and the multitudes of students whose lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Clete’s memory.
