Darlene Mae Barker, 77, formerly of Dundee, Iowa died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the Boone County Hospital in Boone, Iowa after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester by Rev. Roger McKinstry. Visitation will be 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 8 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Manchester. Burial will be in the Forestville Cemetery, Dundee.
Darlene was born June 13, 1931 the fifth child of William M. and Minnie (Schaefer) Baumgartner on a farm north of Strawberry Point, Iowa. On July 21, 1931 Darlene was baptized at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point by Rev. M.O. Jahr. She was confirmed there on May 20, 1945 by Rev. S.J. Meyer. Darlene attended the Alderson School, Flint Ridge School and Strawberry Point High School.
On November 25, 1955 Darlene was united in marriage to Charles R. Barker at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point. This union was blessed with two sons, Jeffrey Charles and James Delbert. The couple made their home in Dundee, Iowa where they owned and operated Charlie's Place. After its sale, they operated the Backbone Drive-In. In 1960, Darlene went to work at the Family Bowl in Manchester. The couple later bought the Empire Building in Manchester in 1966, remodeled it and opened the Empire Cue, Café and Roller Rink. They operated this business over twenty-one years and sold it in 1988. Darlene then went on to work for the Deli-One, until retiring in June of 1996.
Darlene was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee. She taught Bible and Sunday school and served on the church council. She was a member of the Manchester VFW Auxiliary. She was a voracious reader, particularly of biographies, and loved to work crossword puzzles. She enjoyed auctions, family reunions, and could not pass a garage sale. She was fascinated by her family roots and took a keen interest in the Baumgärtner family tree.
Darlene is survived by her sons, Jeffrey Barker of Toledo, Iowa and Dr. James (Julie) Barker of Boone and two grandchildren, Michael and Rachel Barker of Boone.
Darlene was preceded in death by her husband Charles in March of 2009; her parents William and Minnie Baumgartner; two brothers, Lawrence and William Jr. Baumgartner; and two sisters, Marie Hunt and Helen Adams.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established by the family to St. John Lutheran Church, Dundee, Iowa.
