Dean E. Smith, 83, of Delhi, Iowa, died Sunday, December 25, 2005, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, Iowa, after a short illness.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2005 at the Delhi United Methodist Church in Delhi by Pastor Julie May. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester and for an hour before services on Thursday at the church. Burial with military rites will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Delhi.
Dean was born on October 19, 1922 in Delhi, the son of Ayery A. & Irene A. (Hilsenbeck) Smith. He graduated from Delhi High School in 1939. In 1943, Dean enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Philippines during WWII as a Quartermaster on a LCT 1098 Landcraft. On June 10, 1946, Dean was united in marriage to Donna M. Gienapp at St. John?s Lutheran Church in Hopkinton. The couple farmed in the Delhi and Ryan areas. In 1958, Dean became a rural mail carrier. He served 27 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Delhi and Earlville.
Dean was a member of the Delhi United Methodist Church. He was a 50 year member of the Delhi American Legion Post #160. Dean loved trout fishing, was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards and creating in his woodshop.
Dean is survived by his wife, Donna Smith of Delhi; three children, Randa New of Hillsboro, OR, Carroll "Smiley? Smith (Maureen Welter-Smith) of Hillsboro, OR and Valerie (Michael) Leedom of West Burlington, IA; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Donald L. (Millie) Smith of Medford, WI and Ned (Susie) Smith of Coggon.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Ayery A. & Irene A. Smith and his brother, Curtis Smith.
The family suggest memorials be directed to the Delhi Public Library.
