DeWayne J. Hocken, 68, of Walker, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family after a long, courageous battle with cancer on Monday, April 12, 2010. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m. Friday April 16, 2010, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop by Father Ardel Barta. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Walker. Burial: St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Winthrop.
Survivors include his wife, Chris; five children, Shawn Hocken and wife April, Wendy Plantenberg and husband Steve, Tina Chapman and husband Mike, Buffy Jo Hocken, and Misty Cavalier and husband David; grandchildren, Shannon, Samantha, Mikeala, Hunter, Megan, Madalyn, Austin and one on the way.
Also surviving are three sisters, Kathy, Darlene, and Theresa; and seven brothers, LeRoy, Merlin Jr., Dean, Robert, Jerry, Harold, and Ronnie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Roger and Gene.
DeWayne was born September 13, 1941, the son of Merlin and Kathryn (O’Brien) Hocken in Winthrop. On April 12, 1974, he married Christina Sherrets. He owned and operated Hocken’s Stop & Shop for twenty years.
DeWayne enjoyed visiting with friends in his store, boating, camping, and most importantly, his grandchildren.
