Donald Patrick Carlin

Donald Patrick Carlin, 85, of Center Point, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa, after a long battle with cancer. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2026, at Center Point Cemetery in Center Point. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Center Point is assisting the family.

Don was born June 15, 1940, in Boscobel, Wisconsin, the eldest son of Patrick Clair and Eugenia Elizabeth (Horkheimer) Carlin. He began high school in Central City, where he made lifelong friendships, and graduated from Washington High School with the Class of 1958. Don went on to pursue additional education at Coe College, Mt. Mercy College, and Kirkwood Community College. He worked for Cherry-Burrell/International Paper for over 30 years and was instrumental in automating their machine shop.

The best decision Don ever made was marrying his wife of over 50 years, Rosalee (Wayson) Carlin, on March 29, 1968. They remained devoted to one another until Rosalee passed away on May 8, 2018. We find comfort in believing they are together again. Don was a caring husband, father, and grandfather who deeply loved his family.

Don was a father with a quick wit and a sarcastic sense of humor. Our fondest memories include playing cards on the weekends, often into the early morning hours. He was competitive, and we can still hear his pinky ring slam on the table when he knew he had a losing hand. Don also took the whole family on vacation every year to Lake Okoboji. We would swim, fish, jump on the trampoline, and get $20 to spend at Arnolds Park. We would often beg to stay longer, and a couple of times we got our wish!

Don is survived by his children, Kellie Carlin, Dawn Stanard, Jim Stanard, Denise Stanard (Darren Megrew), and Renee Stanard; four grandchildren, Matthew, Brandt, Christopher, and Courtney; and his brothers, Patrick (Melba) Carlin and Stephen (Deb) Carlin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rosalee Carlin; and his brothers, Greg and Dave Carlin.

The family would like to sincerely thank our dad’s neighbors, Melanie and Karmin, as well as the Mercy Oncology staff, especially Dr. Stroh at Hall-Perrine Cancer Center for their compassionate care and support through the years, and the Mercy Hospice staff at the Oldorf Hospice House for the care they provided at the end of Don’s life.
