Donald E. Cummings, 70, of 1740 Daleview Dr., died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. Per Don’s wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. A private family gathering will take place at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his dearest friend and life partner, Janice Joslin of Marion; two daughters, Wendy Cummings and Brandie Raymond, both of California; one brother, David Cummings of Fairview; three sisters, Carrie Hart of Arizona, Nelda Siebles-Bettes of Anamosa, and Margaret Peiffer of Springville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard Williams; and two sisters, Marian Odeen and Nancy Cummings.
Donald was born September 19, 1939 in Iowa City, the son of Hiram “Bert” and Mildred (Raymond) Cummings. He served in the United States Air Force. Donald was a longtime cement finisher in California, Arizona and Iowa.
Throughout Don’s illness, he always maintained a positive attitude. Even on his worst days, he never complained or asked “Why me?” only, “I’m going to beat this.”
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Iowa Blood and Cancer Care staff and especially Dr. Fusselman, whom Donald had great faith in.
