Donald “Don” E. Stamy, 92, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the UnityPoint Transitional Care Center in Cedar Rapids. In accordance with his wishes, a private memorial service will take place at a future date. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
Don was born on May 19, 1933, the son of Elmer Otto and Edith (Lutz) Stamy at his maternal grandparents’ farm, which is now the city of Hiawatha, Iowa. After graduating from Marion High School in 1950 and the University of Iowa in 1954, he farmed with his parents in the Robins area for over 35 years. That farm has been in the Stamy family since 1865 and is now known as the Stamy Legacy Farm. He then worked for the Iowa Court Administration for 19 years.
Don is survived by the love of his life, Joanne E. Hendricks of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Mary Susan Taylor of Solon, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Richard O. and Pauline Stamy, a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Joseph Sobek, and a brother-in-law, Robert Taylor.
Don was president of the Linn County Farm Bureau in 1964 and 1965 and served as Chairman of the Linn County Zoning Commission and the Linn County A.S.C.S. Committee. He was a member of the Marion Presbyterian Church since 1947 and the University of Iowa President’s Club.
Active in the Masonic Fraternity, he was a Past Master and a 70+ year member of Marion Lodge Number 6. He held leadership positions in the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Eastern Star, and Shrine. He was honored as a 33rd degree Mason and served as Grand Master of the Masons in Iowa in 1979.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or a charity of the donor’s choice in Don’s memory.
