Donald LaVern Lanning, 81, of Center Point, died Saturday evening, March 6, 2004, in St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Alburnett United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Fred Darbonne. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, Lafayette, with military rites. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. today (Monday) at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Neva; two brothers, Harold (Geraldine) Lanning of Center Point and Richard (Shirley) Lanning of Alburnett; two sisters, Juanita (Leonard) Miller of Martelle and Betty Ann (Don) Hein of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Bernita Butters of Central City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant daughter.

Born November 5, 1922, in Toddville, Iowa, to Ernest and Lorraine Evans Lanning, he married Neva Anderson on August 29, 1946, at Alburnett Evangelical Church. A World War II veteran, he was a member of Toddville American Legion Post No. 674. He was a lifelong member of Alburnett United Methodist Church, a member of Benton City Lodge No. 81, and was a volunteer for the Indian Creek Nature Center. A lifelong Linn County resident, he was a lover of nature and enjoyed farming and gardening.
