Donald "Buzz" Sawyer

Donald “Buzz” Sawyer, 69, of Center Point, died Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at his home, of cancer. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Friday, July 17, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Center Point. Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 18, at First Christian Church in Center Point with Rev. John Caughron officiating. Burial: Davis Cemetery, rural Center Point.
Buzz is survived by his wife, Yvette; his daughter, Donette (Dick) White of Urbandale; his sons, Kyle & Chad Sawyer, both of Center Point, and Kevin Rolfs of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Heather and Derek White, Hunter and Raven Sawyer, and Samantha Sawyer; a sister, Loretta (Gene) Dufoe of Mesa, Arizona; brothers-in-law, Kent (Kris) Wheeler of Springville and Tonie (Barb) Wheeler of Center Point; and a sister-in-law, Nan (Ed) Schmidt of Springville; dear friends, Larry and Alice McCormick of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Martha Sawyer; a sister, Karen Pollock; and in-laws, Kenneth and Gertie Wheeler.
Don was born April 6, 1940, to Merle and Martha Sawyer in rural Center Point. He married Yvette Wheeler on May 28, 1960, in Center Point. He graduated from Center Point High School and from Mt. Mercy College with a BA Degree. Buzz joined the Air Force where he served as an Air Policeman. He was on the Cedar Rapids Police Force where he served in many capacities. Don was Linn Co. Sheriff and loved serving the people of Linn County.
Don was a devoted family man and servant to people. He was very proud of his 57 Chevy and won a trophy with it.
Buzz was a member of First Christian Church in Center Point, American Legion in Center Point, the Policeman Association, and Classic Car Club.
Don will be remembered for his sense of humor, his giving spirit and his love of people.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
