Doris Marie Gommels, age 88, daughter of Louis and Marie (Crouse) Steckelberg went to be with her Lord on March 10, 2026. She was born March 16, 1937, at home in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Doris attended school in Fort Dodge and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School. She married Darrel Gommels in July of 1956.
She worked at First American Bank as bookkeeping supervisor from 1977 to December of 1999 when she retired. She was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and participated in the Ladies group. She was active in Evangelism for 15 years and felt it was one of the most important things she did.
After Darrel retired they made a move to Cedar Rapids. They made many good friends at their condo. Zion Lutheran Church became their new church home where they made many good friends as well. Doris enjoyed sewing, especially quilts for her grandchildren, and playing cards with her friends. She enjoyed having coffee with friends and neighbors.
She is survived by her son, Glen (Christi) Gommels of Phoenix, Arizona; her daughters, Debbie (Al) Kitt of Hastings, Minnesota, Dawn (Mike) Thomas of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Drenda (Scott) Curtis of Fort Dodge, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Renae (Jaime) Finely, Sarah (Terry) Mielke, Kayla Kitt, Trevor (Cara) Thomas, Whitney (Matt) Hinz, Amanda (Jeff) Cooling, Taylor (Chad) Burns, Gage Gommels, Ashlyn Gommels, and Demetria Buenting; her great grandchildren, Phillip, Leo, Amara, Clara, Margaret, Henry, Rowan, Keira, and Jonathan; her step-grandchildren, Tiera (Cody) Miller, Kristen (Josh) Rogers, and Zain Curtis; and her step great-grandchildren, Connor, Colton, Winter, Carson, and Madelyn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel Gommels; her parents, Louis and Marie Steckelberg; her brothers, Marion and Richard; and many other beloved brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha, Iowa, from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church with Rev. Kevin C. Zellers, Jr., officiating. Burial will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson, Iowa. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family.
