Douglas Timothy Cook, 50, of 353 28th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009, in University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City. Services: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Pete Grose. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m., Friday, December 4, 2009, at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Dawn; mother, Alice (Jim) Leehey of Oelwein; brothers, Donald (Mona), Dennis (Melody) both of Cedar Rapids, Thomas (Diana) of Milliken, Colorado and Scott (Stephanie) of Longmont, Colorado; grandmother, Dorothy Griffith of Perry, Iowa; his “German” daughter, Marleen Retsina of Berlin, Germany; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sherry (Steve) Will of Rochester, Minnesota, Douglas (Laurie) Sanden of Cedar Rapids and Michael (Tracy) Sanden of Western, Iowa; in-laws, Darrell and Deanna Sanden of Cedar Rapids; grandfather-in-law, Dean Lyon of Cedar Rapids; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; his special “adopted” parents, Don and Jerry Beavers of Cedar Rapids; and his two dogs Dutch and Kassie.
Doug was preceded in death by his father; and his grandparents, Ray “Dutch” and Audrey Cook and Floyd Nelson.
Born August 3, 1959, in Springfield, Missouri, Doug was the son of Ray “Ike” and Alice (Nelson) Cook. In 1977, he graduated from Jefferson High School. He was united in marriage to Dawn Sanden on September 29, 1984, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha.
Doug was a member of the Elks Lodge where he enjoyed playing poker with his buddies, and was a member of the FNT. He was an avid bowler and loved to gamble. Doug was also a fan of the Miami Dolphins.
A memorial fund has been established in his memory.
