Douglas A. Patten, 77, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Doug was born on January 29, 1948, in Batavia, New York. His family relocated to Cedar Rapids when he was 10 years old. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1966 and served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970. Doug married Susan Kann on December 21, 1968. They moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, before returning to Cedar Rapids in 1970.
Doug was blessed with three daughters and was an involved, supportive presence in their lives. He showed up as a parent, fan, coach, and teacher of life's lessons, always there in those special moments when dads are most needed.
Doug’s strong work ethic, extensive knowledge, and leadership in the beverage sector earned the respect of those he worked for, trained, mentored, and served—many of whom became lifelong friends. His journey was defined by meaningful connections, shaping his life as much as he shaped the lives of others.
He is survived by his wife, Sue, of fifty-six years; his daughters, Tracy Szyszka, Jessica (Edwin) Lindeman, and Brooke Kingsbury; ten grandchildren—Zoey, Peyton, Charli, Georgi, Cooper, Olivia, Perry, Ashten, Ava, and Maya; his great-grandson, Calvin; his brother, David Patten; and his sister, Diane Havlik.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, George and Viola (Petty) Patten; his brothers, Marvin and Dale; and his sisters, Marcia, Daisy Mae Stark, and Maxine Stewart.
The family will host a Celebration of Life in Doug’s Honor on Sunday, June 29, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the family home. Come as you are—everyone is welcome.
