Ellen D. Ferguson, 85, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, March 11, 2017, at St. Luke’s Unity Point Hospital, Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life Service will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday April 14, 2017 at the Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Private family burial will be held at the Monona Cemetery, Monona, Iowa.
Survivors include her sons, Steve of Denver, Colorado; Kevin (Wendy), and Dan (Darcy), all of Cedar Rapids and eight grandchildren, Beth (Brad) Barvinek, Amber (Mark) Matson, Zach (Molly) Calef, Cole (Sally) Ferguson, Ashley Calef, Wesley Ferguson, Ian Ferguson and Caliee Ferguson; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vivian Nuehring of Elkader, Iowa, and Gretta Baxter of Waukon, Iowa; brother-in-law, Robert Szabo of Castalia, Iowa and seven nieces and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley; two brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; a daughter-in-law; and two nephews.
Ellen was born March 14, 1931, the daughter of Ray and Lucille (Ricketts) Canoe, in Mendon Township, Iowa. A graduate from Monona High School, she was united in marriage to Stanley Ferguson on January 4, 1953 at the First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Ellen worked in the Insurance industry, retiring from United Fire in 1993.
Ellen was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer for many years and a member of the Woman’s Postal Auxiliary. She was a caring, soft hearted person who was dedicated to her church. Ellen enjoyed traveling, swimming, dancing, bowling, playing games and like being fair to all. But most of all, her greatest love was her family, especially her grandchildren, who participated in wiffle ball and water balloon tosses.
