Elodie Marie Greif

Elodie M. Greif, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Loving wife and mother, proud grandmother, loyal fan of Iowa State and University of Iowa sports. Elodie was born on March 12, 1936, in Walker, Iowa. She was the daughter of Bernard and Josephine (VanSteenhuyse) Brecht. She graduated from Walker High School and went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa. On May 31, 1958, Elodie was united in marriage to John E. Greif in Walker. She ran the hot lunch program at St. Pius X Catholic School for many years and was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.

Elodie is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, Julie and Dick Kostner of Abrams, Wisconsin, Brian Greif of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Steven and Karen Greif of Cedar Rapids, Mike and Leah Greif of Marion, Amy and Jim Kramer of Marion, Mary and Robert Bixby of De Pere, Wisconsin. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Matthew and Kristi Schurk, Nicholas and Jenny Schurk, Erin and Kadin Prideaux, John Greif, Trenton Greif, Zachary Greif, Jennifer and Scott Schafer, Benjamin Greif, William Greif, Corey Kramer, Jackson Kramer, Evan and Masha Kramer, Mitchel Bixby, Morgan Bixby and Kaitlin Bixby. She is also remembered by her five great-grandchildren and her siblings, Elaine Dey and James Brecht.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Her husband John passed away on April 3, 2000. Elodie loved cooking for her family, staying up to date with politics, and rooting for the Cyclone and Hawkeye sports teams. She will be greatly missed by the many people who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Elodie’s memory may be directed to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Camp Courageous or the American Cancer Society. Private family services have been held. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
