Elsie Mae Varner, 92, a resident of Crestview Acres Care Center in Marion, a lifelong resident of Linn County, died Sunday, October 5, 2003, at St. Luke?s Hospital, following an extended illness. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by David Graham. Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial: Center Point Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Dean Varner and wife Anogene of Cedar Rapids and Earl Varner of Redfield, Iowa and wife Pamela Varner of Earlham, Iowa; and three grandchildren, Holly (Chris) Hipsley of Ft. Lauderdale, Mark (Christine) Varner of Earlham, Iowa and Emily (Trevor) Martensen of Anamosa.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Myrtle Leidigh and Venita Parry; and a great-granddaughter, Hannah N. Varner.
Elsie was born November 8, 1910, the daughter of Earl and Irene (Snyder) Leidigh in rural Marion. On October 5, 1937, she married Merle I. Varner in rural Toddville. He died January 23, 1985. She was baptized into Christ in 1926 and was a member of the Toddville Church of Christ.
