Eugene Fred Meyen, 85, of Dundee went to eternal rest with the Lord at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, December 20, 2008 following a brief illness.
Funeral Services for Eugene will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dundee by Rev. Roger McKinstry. Family will greet friends from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m., Monday, December 22 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa and one hour before at the church. Burial with military rites at Forestville Cemetery, rural Dundee.
Eugene was born May 12, 1923 in Dundee, Iowa the son of Glenn A. and Elsa (Gienapp) Meyen. He graduated from Dundee Consolidated High School in 1940. Eugene served with the United States Army from November 1944 until November of 1946 where he served in the Pacific Theatre in Japan. On December 19, 1948 he was united in marriage with Velda Hermance at St. John's Lutheran church in Dundee. They moved to a farm four miles southeast of Strawberry Point. In 1960, they moved to Dundee and operated the Village Market Grocery Store for Earl Schroeder. Eugene drove a school bus for West Delaware Schools and served as a city council member in Dundee. Also in 1960, they opened and ran the Forest Villa Resort located near Backbone State Park for 40 summers. In 1965, he was appointed Postmaster at the Dundee Post Office and served there for 25 years until he retired in 1989. At this time, he was a member of the Delaware-Clayton County Postmaster's Association. In 2000, Eugene and Velda retired and sold Forest Villa Resort. He still continued his friendships with the tourists and his sale of firewood.
Eugene was a lifetime member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dundee, a 63 year member of the American Legion, first in the Manchester Legion Post 45 and then transferring to Strawberry Point Legion Post 218, where he served as the chaplain of the unit. He was a volunteer member of the Backbone Lake Friends group. He served as a church council member and caretaker of the Forestville Cemetery. He was a volunteer at the Dundee Senior Citizen's mealsite and also the Golden Age Activity Center in Manchester where he helped with breakfast and other activities including their dances. Eugene was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketballs teams, and was a lifetime fan of Chicago Cubs baseball. Eugene enjoyed the outdoors, the people of the community, community projects and he dearly loved his three grandchildren and being close to them as they were growing up. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Velda Meyen; one son, Jody (Deborah) Meyen of Dundee; three grandchildren, Courtney, Elizabeth, and Brody Meyen all of Dundee.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Elsa Meyen; a sister, Ena Ruth Uptegraph; and uncles, aunts and cousins.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or Backbone Lake Friends Endowment Fund, both of Dundee.
