Evelyn Mae Zalesky Cornish, 88, of Mercy Hallmar, Cedar Rapids, died Monday, April 10, 2006, at the center, following a short illness. Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Lorene E. Wunder and Rev. Ted Miller. There will be a private family visitation. Private Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include a son, Richard (Sherry) Cornish of Marion; a daughter, Diane Hayes of Marion; five grandchildren, Julie (Kraig) Kuhlers, Cathy (Dave) Passmore, Scott (Emily) Cornish, William (Stephanie) Hayes and David (Heather) Hayes; and eight great-grandchildren, Jackson and Davis Kuhlers, Hayden and Luke Passmore, Taylor Hayes, Mackenzie, Johanna and Allison Hayes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; and her brother, Lewis E. Zalesky.

Evelyn was born May 3, 1917, the daughter of Lew and Alta Mae Horn Zalesky, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A 1935 Grant High School graduate, she was united in marriage to William E. Cornish on July 3, 1937. He died January 9, 1983. Evelyn worked in the office of Troy Laundry and then as a clerk for Craemers Department Store in Childrens and Infants. For years, she was a volunteer and auxiliary member for St. Luke?s and Mercy Hospitals.

Evelyn belonged to the Westminster Presbyterian Church for 45 years, where she taught Sunday School and was active in other areas. In August of 1992, she joined First Presbyterian Church. Evelyn was a member of the Kysia Book Circle, Order of Eastern Star Chapter 184, Czech Heritage Foundation, National Czech Slovak Museum and Library and the Shriners Women?s Auxiliary.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Shriners Women?s Auxiliary or Camp Courageous in memory of Evelyn.
