Fannie Lue Kerr, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 15, 2006, at Bickford Cottage, Marion, following a courageous battle with cancer. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Mike Morgan. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2006, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

She leaves to mourn two children, Terry (Brenda) Kerr of Marion; Deborah (Rod) Peyton of Mount Vernon; four grandchildren, Gina (Jesse) Hamilton, Sara Kerr, Lukas Kerr and Holly (Paul) King; sisters-in-law, Mabel Hauetter of Rockledge, Florida, Margaret Kerr of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Elsie Watson of Rock Creek, Kansas; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joy "Curly?; and a brother, Frank DeMont Ewing.

Fannie was born March 20, 1928, the daughter of Ray and Mary (Grieve) Ewing, in Paradise, Kansas. Growing up on a farm, she graduated from Paradise High School in 1946 and attended Fort Hays State Teachers College at Hays, Kansas, and Washburn University at Topeka, Kansas. Fannie began teaching in a country school near Russell, Kansas, and in later years became Principal of a two teacher school. In 1950, she met and married Joy "Curly? Kerr at Topeka, Kansas. He died September 24, 2002.

Fannie worked at the Topeka Air Force Depot and later in Missile projects at Topeka and Wichita, Kansas, Denver, Colorado, Great Falls, Montana, Huntsville, Alabama, and ended her 37 years of Government Service with the Defense Logistics Agency at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A very patriotic and dedicated person, she was proud of her assignment with the Department of Defense.

Fannie loved playing basketball in both grade school and high school and later became an avid Hawkeye fan. She was a 50 year-member of Rebekah Lodge 657 of Ozawkie, Kansas, a member of a teacher sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa, and a life-time member of the United Methodist Church. A loving and caring parent and grandparent, Fannie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

The Wilson Avenue DrugTown and Hy-Vee, where she knew so many and enjoyed talking with them, was her second home. The family would like to give a special thank you for the caring and helpful personnel at these stores. The family also would like to thank Hospice of Mercy, Bickford Cottage and the staff at Iowa Blood and Cancer Care for their special care.
