The Rev. Francis W. "Nick? Shrope, 84, of 3258 County Home Road, Marion, went home to the Lord on Friday, November 10, 2006, at Linn Manor Care Center in Marion. Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2006,at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, by the Rev. Mark Thomas, with military honors provided by Marion American Legion Post No. 298. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday. Burial: Dunkard Cemetery, Toddville.
Survivors include his wife, Ione; a daughter, Sara Bonnett of Marion; a granddaughter, Stephanie Bonnett of Yucaipa, California; two brothers, David (Idella) Shrope Sr. of Marion and Larry (Trudy) Shrope of Copparas Cove, Texas; and a sister, Leona Brundrett of Birch Tree, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Gloria Frances; two sons, Brian and Glenn; and a grandson, Mark Bonnett.
Nick was born February 27, 1922, in Cedar Rapids, at his maternal grandparents (the Sturdivans) home, where his parents, J.H. and Blanche (Sturdivan) Shrope resided. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, then served in the National Guard, the Army Air Corps and the Civil Air Patrol. Nick and Ione Bonebrake were united in marriage on October 24, 1942, in Lancaster, Missouri.
He received his formal training for the ministry from McPherson College and Bethany Seminary and his license from District Conference at Wartburg College. He was ordained at Robins Church of the Brethren, where he served as head pastor for twelve years. He was employed at Linkbelt Speeder for fifteen years and retired from Square D in 1983, after twenty-seven years of employment there.
Nick organized the Masters Gospel Quartet in 1966 and traveled throughout Iowa. He was Past Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Nick.
