Frank A. May, 85, of Marion, died suddenly Monday, February 8, 2010, at his home. Funeral Mass: 9:00 a.m., Friday, February 12, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. The family will greet friends from 4 ?" 7 p.m., Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, where a Parish Vigil will begin at 4:00 p.m. Private Family Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; his daughters, Kathleen May and Cynthia Stevenson; son-in-law, Kelly Stevenson; and 3 grandchildren, James, Annie, and Ian.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, David and John.
Frank was born December 20, 1924, the son of Anthony and Lucille (Snyder) May, in Mankato, Minnesota. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1942. Frank served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, from 1943 to 1946, as an Electrician’s Mate First Class. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1951. He then worked for Sperry Gyroscope Company in Long Island, NY, where he met his wife, Kathleen Kelly. Frank and Kathleen were married in 1958 and lived on Long Island until 1994. He retired from Grumman Aerospace in 1988. Frank was an avid golfer and enjoyed being a member of the Sperry and Grumman Golf Clubs. He loved the Bethpage State Park Black Course, his golf trips to Ireland, and making his own golf clubs. Frank enjoyed skiing and jogging and had many enjoyable hours cruising Long Island Sound on his boat, the Cindy Kate. He was an especially talented electrician and handyman.
Frank was usually making a joke, fixing something, or designing a home improvement project. He will be forever missed by his family and friends. Frank was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
