Frederick E. “Fritz” Bateman, 89, of Marion, died September 14, 2007 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Robert Kunz. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen (Ross) Bateman, twin daughters, Sue (Bob) Pehkonen and Sara Bateman; three grandchildren, Adriane (Mike) Miller, Aaron Hartmann, and Jennifer Hartmann; seven great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Pearl Potter, Eva Williams, Gertrude Smith, Laura Peck, Wilma VanNatta, Margaret Bateman and three brothers, Henry Bateman, Donald Bateman and an infant brother.

Fritz was born March 17, 1918, the son of George and Mary Ann (Zerbe) Bateman. He married Ellen Ross on August 14, 1948 in Vinton, Iowa. He was a self-employed Plastering Contractor for 20 years and then worked in maintenance for St. Luke’s Hospital for 23 years. Fritz first served in the Army and then served in the Coast Guard during WW II. He was a member of the Marion Legion, the Marion Lodge No. 6, the Scottish Rite, the El Kahir Shrine, and he was a 32nd Degree Mason.

Fritz was an avid fisherman and card player.
