Frederick J. Svaldi, 89, of Manchester, died Friday morning, May 5, 2006 at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester following a short illness.

Graveside memorial services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2006 at the Oakland Cemetery, Manchester by Rev. Harlan Kaden. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester is in charge of arrangements.

Fred was born April 24, 1917 in Oskaloosa, the son of Arthur and Anna (Gasperi) Svaldi. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1935. Fred served in the United States Army during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart. On April 1, 1946 Fred was united in marriage to Arleta R. Richter at First Lutheran Church in Manchester. Fred worked for Standard Auto Parts, Henderson Manufacturing Co., Castle Theatre, Oakland Cemetery and Super Wash, all in Manchester.

Fred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Arleta Svaldi of Manchester; two children, Sheryl (John) Douglas of Grand Junction, CO and Steve (Venita) Svaldi of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Jared Svaldi and Lindsey (Gabe) Kauffman; a sister-in-law, Verna Svaldi of Manchester; and a brother-in-law, John Thirtle of North Carolina.

Fred was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Svaldi; two sisters, Vera Bryant and his twin, Francis Thirtle.

Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church in Manchester.
