Gene Allan Zingula, 91, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025, at his home. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Marion Methodist Church in Marion, with a visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the service time. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Friends and family are invited to a luncheon following the burial at the American Legion Hall in Marion.

Gene was born on January 12, 1934, in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, the son of George and Viva (Tudeen) Zingula. He was a 1951 graduate of Alburnett High School and went on to obtain his business degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1953-1955. On March 4, 1956, Gene was united in marriage to Carole Meythaler in Marion. Although the couple later divorced, Gene and Carole spent 47 years together and, with their 3 children, enjoyed family fishing trips to Canada and traveling the world. Gene worked in the engineering and fabrication departments for Rockwell Collins for 37 years, until his retirement in 1993.

Gene was a member of the Marion Methodist Church and was active for many years on the finance committee. He was part of the restoration project of the original church’s’ bell tower – taking the family to the top of the bell tower for a view of Marion.

He was a passionate individual whose pursuits included hunting, fishing and traveling to adventurous world destinations. A devoted outdoorsman, Gene had a particular fondness for trout fishing, where he often found tranquility in the serenity of nature. In addition to his love for the outdoors, Gene greatly enjoyed playing basketball into his 50’s and cards, especially a competitive game of 500. He created a life rich with experiences and cherished memories with family and friends. Gene will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Gene is survived and lovingly remembered by his three children, Doug (Laura) Zingula of Nebraska, Anna (John) Juhl of Virginia, and Susan (Bill) Hanken of Tiffin, Iowa; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Carole.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Robert “Bob” and Richard “Dick” Zingula; his daughter-in-law, Susan Zingula; and his special friend, Zana Chamberlain.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gene’s memory may be directed to Murdoch Funeral Home, who is in charge of all arrangements. Gene’s children have especially fond memories of fishing as children with their dad in the Yellow River State Forest. All memorial monies will be donated to the Friends of Yellow River State Forest in Gene’s memory.
