Gerald J. Hilby, 69, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following a brief illness.
Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 am on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester by Rev. John Flaherty. Visitation will be after 10:00 am Thursday at the church. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Manchester.
Gerald was born February 26, 1941 in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Theodore and Catherine (Heer) Hilby. Graduating in 1959 from Manchester High School, he worked for Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids for 40 years. He owned the “Hilby’s Antique” store in Cedar Rapids. Gerald enjoyed his flower garden and grew prize winning flowers.
Gerald was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Gerald was a volunteer at the Gift Shop at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Gerald is survived by a brother, Kenneth Hilby of Manchester, Iowa; a sister, Iva (Harold) Sperfslage of Mesa, Arizona; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hilby of Masonville, Iowa and Mary Hilby of Manchester, Iowa; a long-time friend, Jim Auen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Catherine Hilby; sisters, Bertilla Hilby, Grace (Mrs. Cletus) Hargrafen, Berniece (Mrs. Lawrence) Wulfekuhle; and brothers, Francis, Joseph, Robert, Ronald “Pete”, John, and Donald Hilby.
