Glen Richard Whiting
August 25, 1926 — February 12, 2016
Glen Richard Whiting, 89, of Cedar Rapids formerly of Prairieburg, passed away Friday, February 12, 2016 at the Hiawatha Care Center. The family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, February 14, 2016, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, Iowa. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 15, 2016, at the funeral home. Burial will be at North Boulder Cemetery, Prairieburg.
Survivors include his children, Rebecca Frazier of Cedar Rapids, Pamela “PJ” (Mark) Olson of Cedar Rapids, and Glenda (Scott) Northland of Marion; his grandchildren, Tamanda (Joe) Drexler, Lydia Olson, Jared Olson, and Melanie Northland; and two great-grandchildren, Harmon Drexler and Aurora Olson-Luong
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce (Truesdell); his son, Nyal Whiting, five sisters; five brothers, and two infant siblings.
Glen was born August 25, 1926 in Central City to Fredrick and Jennie (Warbasse) Whiting. At the young age of 14, he left the family farm to venture out of his own. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After being honorably discharged, He obtained his GED and then attended Hamilton Business College. Glen married Joyce on March 5, 1949 at the Old Brick Chapel in Iowa City. Most of his adult life he worked as a machinist at a variety of companies, ending his career at Harnischfeger. He also was a landlord in the Cedar Rapids area for over 35 years. His life passions included family, travel, genealogy and history. Glen enjoyed sitting in his recliner watching numerous TV shows in his spare time. He started the family tradition of owning Boston Terriers. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge in Cedar Rapids. Glen would want to be remembered as an American who was proud of his country. He showed is patriotism with the many flags he displayed.
