Goldie E. Byers, 99 formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday December 3, 2012, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Memorial Service: 1:30 pm, Friday December 21, 2012, at the Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg, Iowa.
Goldie was born on June 3, 1913, in Center Point, Iowa, the daughter of John & Viola (Clark) O’Brien.
She graduated in 1932, from high school in Iowa City, Iowa. After graduation, she obtained a beauty license and worked for The Lovely Lady in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
On May 3, 1941, Goldie married Kenneth Byers in Cedar Rapids. She quit her job as a beautician to raise 3 step children. After her husband died in 1967, Goldie went to work for Armstrongs in the office until her retirement.
Goldie enjoyed, among other things, sewing dancing costumes for her daughter and step daughter, being a camp fire leader for both girls including spending the night with a bunch of girls at Camp Hitaga and Palisades- Kepler state park, entertaining at the county home through her church, making crafts of all kinds, including making all the flowers for her daughter’s first wedding, and reading whenever possible. Goldie was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was in several plays they put on.
Goldie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant son, Richard Byers; step-son, Edwin Byers; granddaughter, Lori Carpenter; brother, Elwin O’Brien; sisters, Mae Bowersox, Eva Stewart and Loella O’Brien.
Goldie is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Stephen) Hoffman of Bismarck, Arkansas; two step children, Lois Herdliska of Cedar Rapids and Wayne Byers of California; two grandchildren, Lisa (Tom) Kirkwold of Springdale, Arkansas, and Stephen Hoffman, Jr. of Bismarck, Arkansas, and three great grandchildren, Trevor and Evan Kirkwold of Springdale, Arkansas, and Brayden Hoffman of Bismarck, Arkansas. Goldie also has several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.
Goldie amazed ever one she knew about how active and alert she was. She will be greatly missed.
