Gordon Ralph Minehart, 90, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy filled with love and cherished memories. The family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2025, at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, located at 610 31st Street SE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with an additional one-hour visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Inurnment with full military honors will take place at a later date at Coggon Cemetery.
Gordon was born on May 29, 1935, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Theresa (Trefz) Minehart. He was a graduate of Weston High School in West Virginia and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1956-1961. On October 25, 1959, Gordon was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Jean Dosedel, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Ryan, Iowa. Together, they had two sons. He worked for Acme Graphics until his retirement in 1999. Gordon and Jean were members of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church and founding members of Friends of Noelridge Park.
Throughout his life, Gordon was known for his charming personality, sparkling eyes, and bright smile that could light up any room. His rich baritone voice was not only captivating but also added a unique warmth to all his interactions. An avid nature lover, Gordon had a particular fondness for birds and trees. He was known for his remarkable ability to recognize tree species by sight, a testament to his deep appreciation of the natural world. He also found joy in classic pursuits, with hobbies that included old cars and old tractors, reflecting his fascination with both history and craftsmanship. A devoted family man, Gordon shared 65 wonderful years with his beloved wife, embodying a profound commitment to their relationship. His exceptional love for family was evident in everything he did, always prioritizing the well-being and happiness of those he cherished. We celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, laughter, and a genuine connection to the world around him. His spirit will continue to resonate through the lives he touched, forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew him.
Gordon is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Jean Minehart; sons, David Minehart of Cedar Rapids, and Scott (Cindi) Minehart of Marion; three grandchildren, Lewis Minehart, Kyle (Katie) Minehart, and Amanda Minehart (fiancé, Adam Seastrand); two great-grandchildren, Cora and Warren Minehart; and one on the way, Barbara Jean Minehart, due in December 2025; brother, Ned (Mary) Minehart of Grinnell, Iowa; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Theresa Minehart, and sister, Jessie Bernalfo.
