Harlan Henry Hartman

Harlan Henry Hartman, 94, of Marion, Iowa, passed away surrounded by family on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Bickford of Marion. Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marion, with an additional one-hour visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Harlan was born on February 6, 1932, near Guttenberg, Iowa, the son of William “Bill” and Odelia (Borcherding) Hartman. Harlan was received into the Kingdom of God through Holy Baptism on March 18, 1932, in Guttenberg by Rev. E. Lehne. He confirmed his faith on April 14, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Guttenberg.

Harlan was raised in Guttenberg and received his education and graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1950. He was then drafted into the United States Army on July 9, 1952, and served in Korea until 1954. On June 2, 1956, Harlan was united in marriage to Helen Margaret Trede at St. Peter’s in Garnavillo, Iowa. He worked at Iowa Manufacturing for four years and then at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, until his retirement in 1989, after 30 years of employment.

Harlan enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and camped in many. He also toured many countries including Russia, China, Israel, Egypt, and throughout Europe. Harlan loved tending to his yard and garden. He enjoyed reading, time with friends, and taking walks. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events.

He has been a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Harlan was on the Accounting Committee, visited hospital patients, and delivered sermon tapes to shut-ins for many years. He enjoyed Bible Study on Sunday mornings and regularly attended worship and partaking of the Lord’s Supper. Harlan was also a member of the Marion American Legion, VFW, and the club, ‘55 and Growing’.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Helen Hartman; daughter, Rhonda (Allen) Murray; son, Scott (Boonsom) Hartman; grandsons, Michael (Sara) Murray, Bradley (Cally) Murray, and Nicholas Hartman; great-grandchildren, Kellan, Breyson, Stella, and Scarlett Murray; two sisters, Dorothy (Fred) Rubie and Maryanne “Anne” Herber; and sister-in-law, Norma Trede.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers-in-law, Tom Herber, Eldo Trede, and Harold Brase; and sister-in-law, Gertrude Brase.

Memorials in Harlan’s memory may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Marion American Legion.
