Hazel F. Coates, 74, a longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, in her home, following an extended illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. William Harnish. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2004, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Carla Monette (Dick) McVay of Norway, Evelyn (Blane) Phillips, Dorinda Coates, and Nathan Coates, all of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Treg (Kelli) Jamesson, Caley (Tim) Gibbons, Geoff McVay, T. J. McVay, Alea (Jeff) Niemeier, Bryan Phillips, and Lisa (Lonnie) Rohret; eight great-grandchildren, Cale and Lanie Jamesson, Brandon and Madalyn Niemeier, Dalton and Dallas Phillips, Brittany and Braxton Rohret; and her cats, Babe and Bette.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, Nathan A. Coates; five brothers, John, Bill, Sam and Buddy Ford and an infant twin brother; and a great-granddaughter, Lynsey Niemeier.
Hazel was born October 16, 1929, the daughter of John and Maude (Ramsey) Ford in Albany, Georgia. On August 4, 1949, she married Nathan A. Coates in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He died June 26, 1995. For 27 years, Hazel worked for the Roosevelt Hotel and then for 20 years worked at the Sheraton Hotel, retiring in 2002. She loved and enjoyed her work, family and friends.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Hazel.
