Henry A. “Hank” Urban, 94, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, October 4, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 9, 2014, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Father Mark Reasoner. Entombment: Linwood Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids, with military rites by VFW Post #788.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Urban of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Jackie (Bill) Barber of St. Charles, Missouri, Janice (Larry) Donner of Cedar Rapids, Teresa (Ed) White of Knob Noster, Missouri, and Donna Urban of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great great-granddaughter; and a lifelong friend, Rita Fields of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Urban; great great-granddaughter, Nyelee Akus.
Henry was born on April 21, 1920, in Colfax, Iowa, son of Henry and Opal (Ward) Urban Sr. After graduating from Wilson High School, he joined the United States Army in 1941. He was one of the original Darby’s Rangers and served in Africa and Italy. Henry received two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. After his discharge from the Army he worked for Link Belt Speeder/FMC, retiring there after 36 years as a maintenance & shipping supervisor.On October 24, 1946, he married Leona Shupitar in Oxford, Iowa. Henry went to the Olive Tree Restaurant frequently. He was a member of the VFW Post #788 and St. Jude’s Church. Henry was also a member of the Cedar Rapids Bowling Association. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, craft making, watching Hawkeye football and basketball, and was a Cubs and Bears fan. Henry enjoyed traveling to State and National Bowling tournaments. Most of all he enjoyed time with his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Disabled Veterans, Wounded Warriors, Hospice of Mercy Cedar Rapids, or Alzheimer Association.
