Howard W. Carpenter, 94, of Monticello, formerly of Whittier, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at the Monticello Care Center. A joint Celebration of Life for both Howard and Clyda Carpenter will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at the Whittier Community Building, located at 1006 County Home Road, Whittier. A private inurnment will take place at Whittier Cemetery, Whittier.
Howard was born October 19, 1923, in Springville, Iowa, the son of Wilson and Eleanor (Ralston) Carpenter. He graduated from Springville High School and was united in marriage on November 11, 1944, to Clyda Stanley in Springville. Howard served in the United States Army during World War II. He was employed at Collins Radio, now Rockwell Collins, until retiring in 1992. Howard was a member of the IBEW, Jones County American Radio Relay League, and the American Legion. Howard loved to fish, was a long-time amateur radio operator, and a former fox hunter.
He is survived by his children, Alan Carpenter of Marion, Paul Carpenter of Colville, Washington, Amy Wilcox of Anamosa, and David Carpenter of Anamosa; daughter-in-law, Diona Carpenter of Cedar Rapids; seven siblings, Margaret Streets of Cedar Rapids, Vera Ortgies of Anamosa, Lyle Carpenter of Wisconsin, James Carpenter of Monticello, Lois Starks of Central City, Linda Lowen of Pensacola, Florida, and Curtis Carpenter of Bremerton, Washington; and a large extended family.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 71 years, Clyda on January 21, 2015; son, Stanley H. Carpenter; brothers, Ernst, Robert and Lowell; and sisters, Lucille and Shirley.
