Ion Virgil Barbulescu

Ion V. Barbulescu, 64, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. A visitation will take place from 4 – 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in the Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A funeral service will take place the following day on Wednesday, October 21, at 10:00 a.m. at the Legacy Center, with burial to follow at Linwood Cemetery.

Ion was born on January 8, 1962, in Bucharest, Romania, to Sofia and Constantin Barbulescu. He graduated from college at E.S.N.R.B. in Bordeaux, France. On January 25, 2000, he married Mihaela Bosoanca in Colomiers, France.

Ion worked as an engineer at Colins Aerospace for 30 years before his retirement in 2025. He was very passionate about his career and was a lifelong learner, taking classes after retirement in computer science and AI learning. He was a very humble man, and took pride in his intelligence and loved his family. He was an inventor, and even had a patent for a communication component for airplanes used in the military.

He loved being active, running and hiking. Even after his amputation, he stayed active and showed incredible resilience, inspiring all around him.

Ion is survived by his wife, Mihaela Barbulescu; his children, Roxanna Ioana Barbulescu and Octavia Maria Barbulescu; and his cousins, Ruxandra Ciofu, Tatiana (Ion) Surugiu, and Monica (Octav) Jitea.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sofia and Constantin.
